PET NOTES #152 The one about cold weather tips...
Baby it's cold
outside! The time is here to add another blanket to the bed and
snuggle into a warmer place. As we take care to prepare for colder
weather, let's remember to provide for our pets as well. A good
bed offers them with warmth, insulation, support for their backs as well
as a feeling of security.
Also, by giving your pet its own bed, there will be less pet hair and
dander in your areas!
For more tips on providing for your pet, call the Redwood Coast Humane
Society at 884-1304.

PET NOTES #154 The one about Easter
Bunnies on the shelf...
The Redwood Coast Humane Society is aware that at Easter people want
to surprise children with gifts of sweet treats and maybe a live bunny,
chick, or baby duck.
The ASPCA reminds us that eventually many of these pets become too much
of a responsibility, and are dispersed into shelters in large numbers,
so please think twice about the consequences of acquiring baby animals...
why not a cute stuffed toy instead?
If you are seriously considering adopting an Easter pet, contact your
veterinarian or the humane society for detailed information regarding
their needs.
The Redwood Coast Humane Society can be reached at 884-1304.

PET NOTES #155 The one about microchip ID for pets...
As you receive this message, somewhere a family pet is reported
as lost. What can we do to help alleviate the stress of agonizing
over a lost or missing pet?
Collars and ID tags often break loose and leave an animal with almost
no link to its family. This tragedy can be avoided by asking your
vet to inject a tiny microchip ID of scanned data into your pet so that
it can be tracked to you in the event of becoming lost.
To find out more about this low-cost way to trace your pet back to you,
please call your veterinarian, contact the Redwood Coast Humane Society
at 884-1304.

PET NOTES #160 The one about caution regarding fireworks...
The Redwood Coast Humane Society is reminding pet owners that dogs
and cats have excellent hearing and many become easily frightened by loud
noises from crowds and fireworks.
This 4th of July weekend be mindful of keeping pets away from stressful
situations that could be hurtful to them. Place your pets indoors,
turn on a radio or television to distract them, or consider leaving pets
with a friend or boarding them to be sure they do not panic, run off,
and become lost or injured.
For more information regarding pet care, please call the Redwood Coast
Humane Society at 884-1304.

PET NOTES #164 The one about pet obesity...
Is your pet too fat? Just like us, pets who carry excess weight
may suffer from diabetes, or heart, respiratory, liver, muscle, joint
or tendon problems.
First, have your veterinarian perform a thorough physical exam including
blood tests.
If the tests are normal, you can do the following three things to
assist your pet's weight loss and development of healthy habits:
1. increase exercise and activity.
2. limit treats, your vet may prescribe a special diet.
3. feed smaller amounts of pet food frequently throughout the day.
For more detailed pet feeding information, visit your veterinarian, or
call the Redwood Coast Humane Society at 884-1304.

PET NOTES #167 The one about HOWL-OWEEN!...
The Redwood Coast Humane Society
is reminding us to protect our pets on Halloween.
*Walk your dog
early and keep him inside on Halloween night. Pets
can be harassed, injured or stolen by malevolent revelers.
*Set up your jack-o-lantern
out of reach of your pet.
*Don't put a costume
on your pet unless you know he's calm enough to handle it.
If you do dress
him up, make sure the costume doesn't impair movement, vision, hearing
or breathing.
Let him wear the
get-up at home a few times before Halloween to get him used to it.
*Most pets will
be happier in a separate room when trick or treaters are visiting or during
a costume party.
Choose a comfortable
place where your pet likes to be and turn on the tv to help drown out
unfamiliar sounds.
*Don't take your
dog trick or treating.
Dogs can get stressed
and skittish when there is a lot of commotion on the streets.
There are a lot
of strange costumes that might frighten the dog.
*Candy is not good
for dogs, especially it if contains chocolate.
Candy wrappers
can also be hazardous if swallowed.
HAPPY HOWL-OWEEN!!!
